Li-Fi - Light Fidelity, is the latest wireless technology that can be used to transfer the data or access internet at very high speed, say about 100 times faster than Wi-Fi. Li-Fi was first introduced by Professor Harald Haas of Edinburgh University four years ago. Harold Haas points that it can operate with existing LED bulb technology. (it doesn’t mean that you can use the existing LED bulbs which are already set up in your house).
Li-Fi transfers data over light waves where Wi-Fi uses radio waves. Like Wi-Fi, Li-Fi is completely wireless.
A company by the name of Velmenni produced a lightbulb that works with Li-Fi technology. It has conducted a real world test in which Li-Fi was able to transfer data between devices at 1 Gbps, which is roughly 100 times faster than Wi-Fi.You should remember that whether it is Wi-Fi or Li-Fi, the speed also depends on the initial potential speed of the data being delivered by the internet service provider (ISP). If you have low speed broadband connection, then you cannot expect high speed over Li-Fi.
Li-Fi also depends on your device being within range of the light being transmitted by your Li-Fi bulb.
Li-Fi doesn’t work outside in direct daylight since any light signals would be washed out by the overpowering light coming from the sun.
Li-Fi will also require a photosensor (which can “read” incoming light) in your smartphones and laptops.
If everything goes well, we can expect the availability of Li-Fi in three to four years.
